The Random Color Generator Wheel creates a brand-new set of colors every time you ask, puts them on a spinning wheel and picks one for you. Choose how many colors you want, pick a palette style such as Pastel or Complementary pairs, and spin. The winning color appears as a large swatch with HEX, RGB and HSL codes ready to copy.

It is made for designers, artists, teachers and anyone who wants a color they would not have chosen themselves. It is free, needs no account and runs entirely in your browser.

What does the random color generator wheel do?

It does two random steps: first it generates a set of new colors, then the wheel spins to choose one of them. Each slice is labeled with its HEX code and painted in that color, so you can see the whole generated palette before you spin.

This is different from the Color Picker Wheel, which spins through everyday named colors. Here the colors are invented on the spot, so you will rarely see the same set twice.

How to generate and spin random colors

Set the two options at the top of the Entries tab, refresh until you like the palette, then spin.

  • Number of colors: anything from 2 to 48 slices.
  • Palette style: Anything goes, Vivid, Pastel, Deep & dark, Analogous (one hue family) or Complementary pairs.
  • Press New colors for a fresh set in the same style. Changing either option also creates a new set.
  • Spin by clicking the wheel, the SPIN button or Ctrl + Enter, then click the HEX, RGB or HSL code in the result to copy it.

The generated colors are written into the Entries box as HEX codes, one per line. You can delete ones you dislike, add your own codes, or put a name in front, such as Brand blue #2A6FDB.

The six palette styles explained

Each style limits the hue, saturation and lightness the generator may use, so the colors share a mood while staying random within those limits.

Anything goes, Vivid, Pastel and Deep & dark

  • Anything goes: any hue with medium saturation and lightness, for an unpredictable mix.
  • Vivid: highly saturated colors at middle lightness, bright and punchy.
  • Pastel: very light, soft colors suited to baby themes, spring designs and backgrounds.
  • Deep & dark: low-lightness colors such as forest greens, wine reds and inky blues.

Analogous and complementary colors

Analogous colors sit next to each other on the color wheel, like blue, blue-green and teal. The Analogous style picks one random base hue and keeps every color within about 30 degrees of it, which gives calm, harmonious palettes.

Complementary colors sit opposite each other on the color wheel, like orange and blue or red and green. The Complementary pairs style alternates between a base hue and its opposite, which gives strong contrast for posters, logos and sports kits.

HEX, RGB and HSL in plain words

All three codes describe the same color; the result window shows each so you can paste whichever your software wants.

  • HEX, such as #2A6FDB, is the format used in CSS and most design tools.
  • RGB lists red, green and blue from 0 to 255, for example rgb(42, 111, 219).
  • HSL lists hue in degrees, then saturation and lightness as percentages. It matches how the generator thinks, so it is the easiest code to tweak by hand.

Ideas for using random colors

Random colors are most useful as a starting point that breaks habits, not as a final answer.

Design and branding

Generate an analogous palette for a calm interface or a complementary set for a bold poster, then copy the codes into your design file. Spin a few times to choose an accent color.

Art and generative work

Painters and illustrators use random palettes for daily challenges, and creative coders use the HEX codes as seed colors for generative pieces.

Classrooms and parties

Teachers use the styles to show the difference between pastel, vivid, analogous and complementary colors. At home, spin for a party theme, a nail polish color or the color of the next craft project.

How random are the colors?

Both steps use your browser's secure random number generator (crypto.getRandomValues), so neither the palette nor the winner follows a pattern.

Hue, saturation and lightness are drawn at random within the range of the style you chose, then converted to a HEX code. The winning slice is chosen before the animation begins, and each slice has an equal chance unless you switch on weights in Settings, for example 3.#2A6FDB to triple one color's chance.

Settings, saving and sharing

The Settings tab offers Normal, Elimination and Accumulation spin modes, spin length from 1 to 15 seconds, a custom Result title, confetti and sound.

  • Elimination removes each winning color, useful for assigning colors to people without repeats.
  • Accumulation keeps a leaderboard, so you can spin many times and see which color wins most.
  • Save wheel stores the palette under My saved wheels in your browser, and the share link carries the exact colors to anyone you send it to.
  • The embed icon gives you iframe code to put the wheel on your own site, and full screen hides the side panel.

Everything stays on your device; nothing is uploaded. On a phone, a floating SPIN button appears when the wheel is out of view.

Random Color Generator: frequently asked questions

What palette styles are there?

Anything goes, Vivid, Pastel, Deep & dark, Analogous (one hue family) and Complementary pairs.

Are the colours truly random?

Yes. Hue, saturation and lightness are drawn with secure browser randomness, within the limits of the style you chose.

Can I keep a palette I like?

Yes. Save the wheel, or copy a share link: the exact colours are stored in the link.

Is the Random Color Generator free?

Yes. The Random Color Generator is completely free and works without an account, a download or an email address.

Is the result really random?

Yes. The winner is drawn with your browser's cryptographic random number generator before the animation starts, so every entry has exactly the same chance unless you give it a weight. The spin you watch simply lands on that result.

Are my entries saved?

Your entries, settings and spin history are kept in your own browser on this device, so they are still there when you come back. Nothing is uploaded to our servers. Use Save to keep several wheels, or Share to send one to someone else.

Can I share this wheel or put it on my website?

Yes. The share button copies a link containing your entries, so anyone who opens it gets the same wheel. The embed button copies a short code you can paste into a website, blog or classroom page.

What do Normal, Elimination and Accumulation modes do?

Normal keeps every entry on the wheel. Elimination removes each winner after it is picked, so nothing is chosen twice. Accumulation keeps a leaderboard of how many times each entry has won.
