Icebreakers that feel natural
A good icebreaker gets people talking without putting anyone on the spot. The 24 questions on this wheel are light and easy to answer: favourite meals, dream holidays, hidden talents, early bird or night owl. Nobody needs to share anything they would rather keep private.
Letting the wheel pick the question also takes pressure off the host. It feels like a game rather than an interview.
How to run it
- Go round the group. Each person spins and answers their own question.
- Or spin once and have everyone answer the same question.
- Use Elimination mode so questions are not repeated.
- Allow one pass per person to keep things relaxed.
With a group of eight, one question each takes about ten minutes, which is a comfortable warm-up before a meeting or lesson.
Tailor the list to your group
Because the wheel opens in the full Picker Wheel, you can edit freely. Add questions about your project or subject for a work session, or simpler ones like "Favourite animal?" for younger children. Weight the easiest questions, for example 2.Favourite season and why?, if your group is shy.
Save the wheel for the next meeting, or share the link with a colleague who runs a similar session.
Tips for hosts
Answer the first question yourself. When the host goes first with a short, relaxed answer, everyone else follows the tone. Keep answers to under a minute each so the warm-up does not take over the meeting.
- For large groups, split into pairs and let each pair spin and answer together.
- For online calls, ask people to type answers in the chat if speaking feels like a lot.
- For regular meetings, use one question a week and keep a running list of who answered what.
Over time, these small moments help a group get to know each other, which makes the rest of the work feel easier.
Keep a few spare questions in mind in case a result does not suit someone.
